Colombia Work Visa 2026: Requirements, Cost, Timing
The Colombian visa for a job with a Colombian employer is the Migrant visa (type M) in the Worker category, called Trabajador. It is for foreigners who will work in Colombia for a legal entity under an employment contract, and much of the file comes from the employer. This guide sets out who needs it, the documents, the two fees, the response time and the rules after arrival, as published by Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cancillería) and read on 14 October 2026.
Quick answer
Apply online for the Visa M, Trabajador. The Cancillería charges a study fee of USD 56 and a visa fee of USD 279, or EUR 44 and EUR 191 for applications in Europe and Cuba. The Visa Authority has up to 30 calendar days to respond once the study fee is paid. The visa is valid for up to three years, and the work permit covers only the position and employer it was granted for. The same rules apply to every nationality, including citizens of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the United States.
Who needs a Colombian work visa
The Cancillería exempts holders of certain passports from a visa for short stays such as business, leisure, tourism or cultural interest, but only where those activities do not generate payment for services, a salary or wages in Colombia. A job with a Colombian employer therefore needs a visa whatever passport you hold.
| Passport | Short visits without pay in Colombia | Paid work for a Colombian employer |
|---|---|---|
| United States | On List A: exempt from a short-stay visa | Visa M, Trabajador |
| India | On List C: states with a conditional exemption from the short-stay visa. Confirm the conditions with the consulate. | Visa M, Trabajador |
| Pakistan | Not on Lists A, B or C: a Visitor visa is needed | Visa M, Trabajador |
| Bangladesh | Not on Lists A, B or C: a Visitor visa is needed | Visa M, Trabajador |
India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are also on the Cancillería's list of passports that require a V Airport Transit visa to change planes in Colombia on the way to a third country. Travellers who are not on Lists A, B or C apply for a Visitor visa at the Colombian consulate nearest to their place of legal residence.
What the Trabajador visa is
- Purpose: for foreigners who aim to work in Colombia with a legal entity under an employment contract.
- Validity: up to three (3) years.
- Work permit: granted exclusively for the position, entity, profession or activity for which the visa was issued, and valid for the same time as the visa.
- Path to residence: time as holder counts toward the Resident visa after a minimum of 5 years.
- Absence rule: a Migrant visa lapses automatically if the holder is away from Colombia for more than 180 continuous calendar days within each 365 days counted from the issue of the visa.
