Denmark Positive Lists 2026: Which Jobs Get You a Work Permit

By the SettleBuddy editorial teamUpdated 22 July 20269 min read

Below Denmark's famous salary threshold sits its second door: two shortage lists that admit the roles Denmark actually can't fill — nurses and machinists alongside engineers — at ordinary Danish pay. How the lists work, how titles get on them, and how to read your own offer against the machinery.

Quick answer

Two lists, updated every 1 January and 1 July: the Positive List for People with a Higher Education (degree-level shortage roles) and the Positive List for Skilled Work (vocational roles, classified by DISCO-08 codes). Requirements: a job offer matching a listed title, your qualifications matching the role (degree for the HE list; qualifying skilled education for the Skilled list), and pay and terms at Danish standardsno fixed salary threshold. Fee DKK 6,810; family accompanies with full work rights (DKK 3,080); the Fast-Track educated track wraps listed roles for certified employers. The lists are the below-Pay-Limit lane. Sources below.

Two lists, two worlds

The lists are built from official labour-shortage statistics (the styrelsen's recruitment-difficulty surveys feed them) — which means they move with the economy: a title present in January can exit in July and return the next year. Two planning rules follow: check the list in force on your filing date (the application reads the current list), and file while your title is on — a granted permit survives the title's later exit; an unfiled plan doesn't.

The qualification match: where files are won

The lists' real assessment is the triangle: the listed title ↔ the actual job content ↔ your documented qualifications. SIRI reads the employment contract's duties against the title claimed and your education against both. What that means in practice: title engineering matters — an offer papered as "IT consultant" when the work is listed "software developer" invites mismatch trouble; write the contract in the list's language where truthful. Degrees travel with documentation — diplomas, transcripts, and where the profession is regulated in Denmark (healthcare above all), the Danish authorisation first: a nurse's file without the Danish authorisation isn't a shortage hire, it's a future one. Skilled-list education means completed vocational training in the trade — experience alone argues weakly against the list's education logic; document the certificate chain.

Process and the surrounding machinery

Reading your offer against the system: the router

Case study: how a listed hire actually runs

Trace one to make it concrete. A Manila ICU nurse targets Denmark: step one is not a job board but the Danish Patient Safety Authority's authorisation process — credential evaluation, the language pathway, the adaptation-period logic — begun a year before any application, because "nurse" on the HE list means authorised nurse. Parallel track: Danish from month one, since the authorisation itself and the ward both demand it (the permit never will — the profession's regulator gets there first). With authorisation progressing, the hospital region's international-recruitment office (Danish healthcare recruits programmatically — the regions run standing pipelines) issues the offer written to the listed title; the region is Fast-Track certified, so the SIRI filing (DKK 6,810, employer-assisted) lands a start date measured in weeks. Her husband files as accompanying family (DKK 3,080), lands with unrestricted work rights, and takes a logistics job the first month — household arithmetic doubled. Contrast the counterfactual: the same nurse chasing the offer first and the authorisation second sits unemployable for the year the credential file takes. The Positive List's lesson generalises: for regulated professions the list is the second gate, not the first — sequence regulator → language → employer → SIRI, and Denmark's machine runs precisely as designed.

The lists as strategy: for candidates and employers

For candidates abroad, the twice-yearly list is a targeting document: it names, in public, exactly which professions Danish employers are struggling to fill — a job-search heat map no recruiter newsletter matches. The productive workflow: match your title on the current list → target the sector's employers directly (Danish firms in shortage sectors answer cold applications from qualified internationals at rates the rest of Europe wouldn't believe) → let the certified-employer Fast-Track machinery do the rest. For employers, the list plus certification converts international hiring from a project into a process. And for both: the Danish-standards pay rule means negotiations happen inside the collective-agreement corridor — offers are comparable, transparent and quick, which is the Danish labour market's whole personality in one clause.

Key takeaways

FAQ

My title left the list after I got my permit — am I safe?

Yes — the grant reads the list at filing; later exits don't revoke permits. Extensions assess the ongoing employment, not the list's current state.

Does experience substitute for the skilled education?

The Skilled list's logic runs on completed vocational education in the trade — long experience without the certificate chain argues uphill. Document what exists; consider recognition routes where your country's certificates map.

Are the lists long?

They breathe with the economy — recent cycles have run dozens of titles each, heavy on engineering, IT, healthcare (HE) and technical trades (Skilled). The current lists on nyidanmark.dk are the only authoritative read.

Is Danish required?

Not for the permit. For the trades' daily reality and healthcare authorisation, Danish arrives fast — and the PR system's language conditions await all long-stayers (Language Lab's Danish track runs to those tests).
