France Visa Processing Time 2026: Official Timelines

By the SettleBuddy editorial teamUpdated 13 October 20266 min read

France publishes one headline figure for visa decisions and several deadlines around it. The total wait can be longer, because the appointment, any checks with other authorities and, for work visas, the employer's work authorisation come on top. This guide sets out each official time limit, from France-Visas, the official visa portal, and Service-Public.fr, as read on 13 October 2026.

Quick answer

France-Visas states that the decision-making time on visa applications is usually 15 days, and that this may be extended up to 45 days in special cases. A short-stay visa application must be submitted at least two weeks before your trip and no more than 6 months before it. For a work visa on the standard route, add the 3 consecutive weeks the job must be advertised before the employer can request a work authorisation. France does not issue visas on arrival.

What "usually 15 days" covers

The 15 days is the decision-making time once your application has been submitted. France-Visas is careful to add three qualifications:

France-Visas treats the appointment as a separate step: it tells applicants to allow time both to obtain an appointment and to have the application processed before the planned start of the trip.

The five steps and where time goes

  1. Check whether you need a visa. The visa wizard gives the visa type, the documents and the fee.
  2. Set up the online application. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years ago and have at least two blank pages. Documents in languages other than English or French may have to be translated into French.
  3. Book the appointment. In most cases a service provider receives applicants on behalf of the consulate.
  4. Submit the application with your complete file. The fee is collected, and a photograph and 10 fingerprints are taken. Applicants over 12 must appear in person for a first application.
  5. Track the application and collect your passport. You receive a notification when it is ready. In some countries the passport may be sent by post.

One step can be skipped by repeat travellers: if a biometric Schengen visa was issued to you less than 59 months ago, your biometric data can be reused.

Short-stay visas

Submit the application at least two weeks before your planned visit. It cannot be submitted more than 6 months before. If you run out of time, there is no fallback at the border: France-Visas states plainly that French authorities do not issue visas on arrival.

Work visas: the time before the visa

On the employee and temporary worker route, the visa is the last step. Before it:

The talent card avoids this stage, because the employer does not have to apply for a work authorisation.

Student visas

Students in the countries covered by the "Études en France" procedure apply to enrol through that platform, and the visa application is then sent automatically to the French consular authorities. Campus France lists 73 countries under this procedure.

Deadlines after you arrive

Your visaWhat to doBy when
Long-stay visa valid as a residence permit (VLS-TS)Validate it onlineWithin 3 months of arrival
Long-stay visa marked "carte de séjour à solliciter"Apply for a residence permit at the prefectureWithin 2 months of arrival
VLS-TS or residence permit nearing expiryApply to renew onlineNo earlier than 4 months and no later than 2 months before expiry

Missing the first deadline has consequences. Without validation within three months you are no longer a legal resident of France and cannot re-enter the Schengen Area. For a student renewal, Service-Public.fr adds that if the prefecture has not replied within 90 days, that is an implicit refusal.

If the visa is refused

A refusal decision must be justified. You may challenge it within 30 days by post. For a long-stay visa the appeal goes to the Commission for Appeals against Visa Refusal Decisions in Nantes; it must be written in French and signed, and it is mandatory before any appeal to the administrative judge.
