Hungary Work Visa 2026: Permits, Fees, Who Qualifies
Hungary has several residence permits for work, and the right one depends on your nationality and qualifications. The general residence permit for employment, the guest-worker route, is open only to nationals of the countries listed in a government decree, which currently names Georgia, Armenia and the Philippines. Skilled workers from elsewhere, including India and Pakistan, look at the Hungarian Card or the EU Blue Card. This guide sets out who qualifies for what, where to apply, the fees and the processing times, as published by Hungary's National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (NDGAP) and read on 14 October 2026.
Quick answer
The residence permit for employment is currently limited to nationals of Georgia, Armenia and the Philippines. For a skilled job, the Hungarian Card requires a professional qualification specified by decree and is valid for up to 3 years. The EU Blue Card requires a monthly salary of at least HUF 1,001,048 in 2026 and is valid for up to 4 years. The fee is EUR 110 at a consulate, or HUF 26,000 via Enter Hungary. The NDGAP decides within 70 days.
Which permit fits you
| Permit | Who it is for | Validity |
|---|---|---|
| Residence permit for employment (guest workers) | Paid employees who are nationals of a third country listed in Annex 1 of Government Decree No. 450/2024: Georgia, Armenia and the Republic of the Philippines | Up to 2 years, extendable by one year, never more than 3 years from first issue |
| Hungarian Card | Employees in a job that needs a professional qualification specified by the minister for higher education, plus professional athletes and coaches, performers and film workers | Up to 3 years, extendable for 3 years |
| EU Blue Card | Highly qualified employees paid at least the monthly minimum | Up to 4 years, extendable for up to 4 years at a time |
The NDGAP adds that the minister responsible for employment policy may list occupations in which no residence permit for employment can be granted, and that no such communication has been issued so far.
The residence permit for employment, in detail
- Purpose: actual work for or under the direction of others, for pay, under an employment contract, or for a third-country employer fulfilling an agreement with a Hungarian employer.
- Proof of purpose: a preliminary agreement on an employment relationship, or a document on the employment relationship.
- Other proof: means of subsistence, accommodation in Hungary, comprehensive health insurance, and the conditions of exit, such as a valid passport and a ticket or money for the journey.
- Limits: family members of a holder cannot get a residence permit for family reunification, except a child born in Hungary, and holders cannot get a national residence card.
- Extension: only from inside Hungary via Enter Hungary, no earlier than 90 days and no later than thirty days before expiry.
The Hungarian Card
- Who: third-country nationals in paid employment, or company owners or managing directors who also perform actual work, and highly qualified staff placed by a third-country employer under an agreement with a Hungarian employer.
- Qualification: you must have a professional qualification specified in the decree of the minister responsible for higher education, unless you are a professional athlete or coach, a performer, or work in film.
- Proof: a preliminary agreement or valid work contract for a job that requires a higher professional qualification, and the certificate of that qualification.
The EU Blue Card
The NDGAP states that the minimum monthly earning for an EU Blue Card increases in 2026 to HUF 1,001,048, and to HUF 800,838 for listed health professions such as general practitioners, pharmacists and nursing professionals. In 2026, the salaries of all EU Blue Card holders must reach this amount. Employers can apply only through Enter Hungary.
Where and how to apply
- From abroad: if you cannot enter Hungary visa-free, apply at a Hungarian embassy or consulate in your country of nationality or habitual residence. No separate visa application is needed, because the residence permit application includes the visa to collect the permit.
- From inside Hungary: if you can enter visa-free and do not hold a residence permit, you can apply in Hungary, online through the Enter Hungary platform or in person at the regional directorate for your place of accommodation.
- Online applications: an Enter Hungary application counts as received once the fee is paid and your photo, fingerprints and signature are recorded within 15 days.
- Collecting the permit: after approval at a consulate, you receive a single-entry type "D" visa for a stay of not more than 30 days, valid for 3 months. If you do not enter within 3 months of approval, the permit becomes invalid. The permit card is delivered by post.
