Iceland Work Visa 2026: Permit Types, Cost, Timing

By the SettleBuddy editorial teamUpdated 14 October 20268 min read

To work in Iceland, a non-EEA national needs two things that come together: a work permit from the Directorate of Labour, tied to a specific job with a specific employer, and a residence permit based on work from the Directorate of Immigration. You cannot start working until both are granted. This guide sets out the four types of work-based permit, the requirements every applicant must meet, the fee, the current processing times, and what it means for US, Indian and Pakistani applicants, as published on the Icelandic government's portal, Ísland.is, and read on 14 October 2026.

Quick answer

You need a job offer and a work permit for that job and employer, plus a residence permit based on work. The application fee is 80.000 ISK, and applications are submitted on paper. You must be 18 or older, show secure means of support of at least 259.951 ISK a month, and hold health insurance with cover of at least ISK 2,000,000. In 2026, first-time residence and work permits took 2 months on average, and a permit for expert work can last up to four years.

Requirements for every applicant

How to apply and what it costs

  1. Pay the fee: 80.000 ISK by bank transfer before applying. An unpaid application is returned, and the fee is not refunded if you cancel. Paid expedited processing is no longer offered.
  2. Submit on paper: applications must be submitted in their original form on paper, by post to the Directorate of Immigration at Dalvegur 18, 201 Kópavogur, or in its drop box. They can also be handed in at the Directorate's reception or at District Commissioners outside the capital area.
  3. Wait for the decision: see the processing times below.
  4. Collect the card: attend a photo appointment. The Directorate then asks Registers Iceland to register your legal domicile, which gives you a personal identification number (kennitala).

If you need a visa to travel to Iceland, a request for an entry visa is sent to the relevant embassy once the permit is granted.

Processing time

The Directorate of Immigration's waiting-time page, last updated 7 October 2026, shows it was processing first-time residence and work permit applications received in June 2026. On average in 2026, it took 2 months from receipt of a first-time application until the permit was granted. The Directorate notes that averages do not predict when a pending application will be decided.

Can you be in Iceland while you wait?

US, Indian and Pakistani applicants

The United States of America is on the Schengen list of nationalities that need no visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Indian and Pakistani ordinary passports are not on that list, so applicants from these countries need a visa for the trip, and for a shortage-of-labour permit they must stay outside Iceland while the application is processed. Every applicant still needs the work permit and residence permit, and the fee is the same.
