Italy Visa Fees 2026: Schengen, National and Study Visas

By the SettleBuddy editorial teamUpdated 13 October 20266 min read

Italy sets its visa fees in euros and its consulates collect them in local currency at a rate that changes four times a year. Italian missions publish the same euro amounts: one fee for a short-stay Schengen visa, one for a long-stay national visa and a lower one for study. This guide lists them with the exemptions and payment rules, from the official pages of Italy's diplomatic missions and the European Commission, as read on 13 October 2026.

Quick answer

A Schengen visa for Italy costs 90 euro for adults and 45 euro for minors aged 6 to 12; children under 6 pay nothing. A national visa (type D, more than 90 days) costs 116 euro for every applicant, adults and minors alike. A national study visa costs 50 euro. Fees are paid in local currency at the quarterly consular exchange rate and are not refundable. Family members of EU and EEA citizens are exempt.

What you pay in your own currency

Italian missions convert the euro fee using the Quarterly Consular Exchange Rate. The embassy in Wellington explains that the amount changes at the beginning of each quarter: 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. As an illustration, the consulate in Detroit published these US dollar amounts for January to March 2026:

VisaEuroUS dollars, first quarter of 2026
Schengen visa90105
Schengen visa, minors 6 to 124553
Schengen visa, facilitation countries3541

Those dollar figures applied to that quarter only, so always open the current table of consular fees for the mission where you apply.

Who pays nothing

The embassy in Wellington sets out which relatives of Italian, EU, EEA or Swiss citizens qualify for the exemption:

Refunds

Visa fees are not refundable; the consulate in Detroit states this plainly. The embassy in Wellington notes the exceptions under the EU Visa Code: the fee can be reimbursed where the consulate is not competent or the application is inadmissible.

How much is an Italian student visa?

50 euro for a national (type D) study visa. A type C study visa of up to 90 days has no fee.

Can I pay extra for faster processing?

No. The Italian consulate in Detroit states that rush procedures are not available.
