Switzerland Work Visa 2026: Permits, Quotas and Fees
Switzerland runs what its State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) calls a dual system. Citizens of EU and EFTA states get easier access under the free movement agreement. Everyone else is a third-state national, and only a limited number of highly qualified workers are admitted each year, on an application made by the employer. This guide sets out the requirements, the 2026 quotas, the procedure, how long it takes and what a visa costs, as published by SEM and on the federal portal ch.ch and read on 14 October 2026.
Quick answer
If you are from outside the EU and EFTA you need a firm job offer, and your employer applies for the work permit at the cantonal authority. You must be a manager, specialist or other qualified worker, and the employer must show that nobody suitable could be recruited in Switzerland or the EU/EFTA. In 2026 the quota is 8,500 permits: 4,500 B residence permits and 4,000 L short-stay permits. SEM says to expect six to eight weeks for a file to be processed fully. You register with your commune within 14 days of entering and cannot start work before that.
Which rules apply to you
| Your citizenship | What you need to work | Who applies |
|---|---|---|
| EU or EFTA state, working up to 3 months | No residence permit. Your employer registers the job through the notification procedure at least one day before it begins. | The employer notifies |
| EU or EFTA state, working longer than 3 months | A residence permit from the commune where you live, applied for before starting work | You |
| Any other country | A work permit, even for short-term employment, within the annual quota | Your future employer |
| United Kingdom | The third-country rules, with a separate quota | Your future employer |
The Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons has not applied to the United Kingdom since 1 January 2021. UK nationals who already had residence rights in Switzerland before 2021 are covered by a separate agreement on acquired rights.
Requirements for non-EU/EFTA nationals
- Qualifications: admission is limited to managers, specialists and other qualified workers. SEM says this primarily means people with a degree from a university or university of applied sciences and several years of professional experience. Depending on the profession, people with special training and several years of experience may also be admitted.
- Precedence: the employer must prove that, despite genuine efforts, no suitable worker could be recruited from Switzerland or an EU/EFTA state. The vacancy must be registered with the regional employment centres (RAV) and advertised via the European Employment System (EURES).
- Overall economic interest: admission must be in the interests of Switzerland and the Swiss economy as a whole, and the application must explain and document why.
- Pay and conditions: salary, social security contributions and terms of employment must match what is customary in the region, the profession and the sector.
- Quota: a permit must still be available under the year's maximum numbers.
- Accommodation: suitable accommodation must be available.
- For longer stays: professional and social adaptability, language skills and age are taken into account.
SEM's FAQ adds that a job offer in Switzerland is not enough on its own to make you eligible for a work permit.
The 2026 quotas
| Group | Total for 2026 | B residence permits | L short-stay permits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workers from third states | 8,500 | 4,500 | 4,000 |
| UK nationals | 3,500 | 2,100 | 1,400 |
The Federal Council set these numbers on 19 November 2025 and left them unchanged from 2025. Its statement notes that the quotas have not been fully used in recent years: by 31 December 2024, companies had used 74 percent of the third-state quota for 2024.
How the application works
- Get a firm job offer from a Swiss employer.
- The employer applies to the cantonal employment or immigration authority, enclosing a contract signed by both parties that states it applies only if the authorities grant a work permit.
- The canton takes a preliminary decision. Applications it approves go to SEM for final approval.
- SEM decides under criteria that apply to the whole of Switzerland. Its decision is subject to a fee payable by the employer, and does not yet permit you to enter.
- If you need a visa, you also apply at the Swiss representation responsible for your place of residence. The canton sends it an electronic visa authorisation once SEM has approved, and you collect the visa there.
- Register with the authority at your place of residence within 14 days of entering Switzerland. You can only begin work after you have registered.
- Timing: SEM says that in its experience you should expect to wait six to eight weeks for the file to be processed fully, and longer in complex cases or where a business applies for the first time.
- Documents: qualifications are checked from your CV, education certificates and employment references. The authorities want copies in the original language with translations into a Swiss official language or English.
- Sponsorship: the pages we read describe no separate sponsor licence. The employer's application is the route, and ch.ch says it is up to your future employer to take the necessary steps.
- Online: the work permit application is the employer's filing with the canton. For the visa, ch.ch says that in certain cases you can submit your application via the online visa system.
Do you need a visa as well?
| Citizenship | Stay of up to 90 days | Stay of more than 90 days |
|---|---|---|
| United States of America | No visa. A visa is required to work in certain sectors, or to do any other paid work for more than 8 days in a calendar year. | Visa required |
| India | Visa required | Visa required |
| Pakistan | Visa required | Visa required |
| United Kingdom, passport marked British Citizen | Visa exemption | Visa exemption |
These entries are from SEM's overview of ID and visa provisions by nationality, version of 3 April 2026. A visa exemption is not a work permit: ch.ch states that non-EU/EFTA nationals require a work permit even for short-term employment. Apply for a visa preferably at least two months, and no longer than six months, before you travel.
What it costs
- Visa fee in India: the Embassy of Switzerland in India's price list, valid from 01-04-2026, shows the adult visa (EUR 90.00) at CHF 82.00 or INR 9,600.00. The embassy states that the fee is due when the application is submitted and is not refundable.
- Other countries: fees are set by the Ordinance on fees under the Federal Act on Foreign Nationals and the Visa Code, and are payable in the currency determined by each Swiss representation. We read the India table only, so check the price list of the representation where you apply, for example in Islamabad.
- Work permit decision: SEM's decision carries a fee that is payable by the employer.
Permits you will see
| Permit | What it is |
|---|---|
| L | Short-stay permit |
| B | Residence permit |
| C | Settlement permit |
| G | Cross-border commuter permit |
- Changing jobs on an L permit: possible only if you cannot continue with your current employer, and you must stay in the same sector and profession.
- Changing jobs on a B permit: as a general rule no further authorisation is needed, unless the permit was granted for a specific job and is expressly linked to a labour market condition.
- All foreign nationals who remain in Switzerland for more than three months must obtain a permit.
Exceptions SEM lists
- Company transfers: the precedence rules do not apply to operational transfers of senior managers and essential specialists in international companies.
- Swiss graduates: holders of a degree from a recognised Swiss higher education institution can be admitted without the precedence check if there is a significant academic or economic interest in their employment.
- Family members: family members of Swiss nationals and of residence permit holders do not need an additional permit process to take up employment. Family members of short-term permit holders do.
- Self-employment: possible, but you must show a lasting positive impact on the Swiss labour market and submit a business plan.
After you start: tax, insurance and qualifications
- Tax at source: foreign employees who do not hold a C permit are taxed at source. The employer deducts the tax from your salary every month.
- Health insurance: compulsory but private. You must take it out for yourself and your family no later than 3 months after arriving or beginning work.
- Accident insurance: your employer must insure you if you work eight hours a week or more.
- Minimum wage: there is no national minimum wage. ch.ch lists cantonal minimums, including CHF 24.59 an hour in Geneva and CHF 21.35 an hour in Neuchâtel.
- Regulated professions need recognition of foreign qualifications from the competent authority. Non-regulated professions do not.
The detail for each group is in our guides to the Swiss work permit for non-EU nationals and the Swiss work permit for EU citizens.
