Spain Visa Processing Time 2026: Official Deadlines

By the SettleBuddy editorial teamUpdated 13 October 20266 min read

Spain sets a legal decision period for each type of visa, and they differ a great deal: days for a telework visa, a month for a study or work visa, and months more where an authorisation must first be granted in Spain. This guide lists each official deadline, with the windows that apply to you as the applicant, from Spain's consulates, the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration and the European Commission, as read on 13 October 2026.

Quick answer

A Schengen visa has a legal decision period of 15 calendar days, extendable to 45. A study visa or work visa is decided within 1 month of the application. A telework (digital nomad) visa has a legal period of 10 days. For an ordinary job, add the employer's work authorisation in Spain, which has a three-month deadline. For family reunification, the authorisation in Spain takes up to two months before the visa stage starts. All these periods can be extended if an interview or more documents are requested.

Decision periods by visa type

Each consulate adds the same caveat: the period may be extended when an interview or additional documents are requested. For Schengen visas, applications from nationals of certain states also require consultation with central authorities, which can lengthen the procedure.

The stage before the visa

For three common routes the visa is the second step. The first happens in Spain and has its own clock.

RouteAuthorisation in SpainDeadlineIf there is no answer
Ordinary employmentInitial temporary residence and work authorisation, requested by the employerThree monthsDismissed by administrative silence
Family reunificationTemporary residence by family reunification, requested by the residentTwo monthsDismissed by administrative silence
Study, when applying from inside SpainLong-term stay authorisation for studiesTwo monthsDismissed by administrative silence

"Administrative silence" here works against the applicant: if the period passes without notification, the request may be understood as refused.

Schengen visas: when to apply

A worked timeline for an employee

  1. Employer applies in Spain. Up to three months for the decision.
  2. You apply for the visa. Within one month of the employer being notified.
  3. Consulate decides. Within one month.
  4. You collect the visa. Within one month.
  5. You enter Spain while the three-month visa is valid, are registered with Social Security within three months of entry, and request the identity card within one month of that registration.

If the visa is refused

Refusals are always notified in writing with the grounds for the decision. You have two remedies, as set out by the consulates:

How to follow your application

The consular office gives you proof of receipt with a code. With it you can check the status of the file online through the foreign ministry's consular tracking service.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Spain visa take to process?

The legal period is 1 month from the day after you apply. Applications must be submitted at least two months before the studies begin.

How long does the Spain digital nomad visa take?

The legal decision period is 10 days from the day the consular section forwards your documents through the visa system, not from the day you hand them in at the visa centre.
