Japan Visa Processing Time 2026: Days by Visa and Country
A Japan visa runs on two clocks. The visa itself is issued by a Japanese embassy or consulate, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) puts that at 5 working days when nothing is wrong with the application. For work, study and family stays there is usually an earlier step in Japan, the Certificate of Eligibility (COE), with a standard processing period of 1 to 3 months. This guide gives both, the figures that individual embassies publish, and the average processing days the Immigration Services Agency (ISA) reported for permits granted in July 2026. Everything was read on the official pages on 14 October 2026.
Quick answer
MOFA's standard is 5 working days from the day after your application is received, provided there is no problem with its content. If the embassy refers the case to Tokyo, a visa may take more than a month. A long-term visa applied for without a COE typically takes one to three months. The COE has a standard processing period of 1 to 3 months, and ISA's July 2026 averages, counted in days, ran from 37.8 for an intra-company transferee to 241.9 for a business manager. The embassies that publish a position on it say processing cannot be expedited.
The official timelines at a glance
| Step | Where it is handled | Official time |
|---|---|---|
| Visa, application with no problem in its content | Embassy or consulate | 5 working days from the day following receipt |
| Visa, case sent to MOFA in Tokyo for further examination | MOFA in Tokyo | May take more than a month |
| Visa, where additional confirmation is required | Embassy or consulate | A couple of weeks to several months |
| Long-term visa applied for without a COE | Embassy or consulate | Typically one to three months |
| Certificate of Eligibility | Regional immigration office in Japan | Standard processing period of 1 to 3 months |
MOFA adds that it may take longer than usual when a large number of applications arrive in a short period. Additional confirmation means things like a request for more documents, an interview with the applicant or inquiries.
Processing time by country of application
Each embassy sets out its own practice. These are the statements on the pages of the missions we read.
| Where you apply | What the mission says | How you apply |
|---|---|---|
| Philippines, Embassy in Manila | It may take several weeks to process an application for a tourist visa, due to the increasing number of applications | Through the Visa Center, which started on April 7th 2025 |
| India, Embassy in New Delhi | Processing times can vary significantly due to increased volume. No figure in days is given. | Through VFS, with no prior appointment needed |
| India, Consulate-General in Bengaluru | At least 5 working days until you receive your passport, counted from the day after submission | Through the visa agency (VFS) |
| United States, Embassy in Washington DC | In general 5 business days. It may take more than one month depending on the visa. | In person at the embassy. Applications by mail are not accepted. |
| Pakistan, Embassy in Islamabad | 6 working days at the earliest. Cases needing thorough examination may take several months. | Through VFS Global / Gerry's Visa |
| Singapore, Embassy | 1 week or longer if there are no issues with the documents | At the Japan Visa Application Centre (JVAC) |
| United Arab Emirates, Consulate-General in Dubai | The visa page gives no processing time in days | Through VFS Global since August 1st, 2024 |
- Bengaluru's example: if you apply on a Monday, the visa is issued on the following Monday.
- Washington's advice: apply approximately 1.5 months before your departure date. That embassy takes applications only from residents of Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. Residents of other states are referred to the list of Japanese consulates in the U.S.
- Pakistan: residents of Sindh and Baluchistan apply at the Consulate General in Karachi. The embassy does not issue any visa on the same day as the application.
- Singapore: only long-term residents of Singapore may apply there. Short-term visitors are told to apply in their home country or country of residence.
How early you can apply
- Not too early: the embassies in India, the United States and Singapore accept applications only within 3 months of the travel date. The Manila embassy also warns against applying earlier than 3 months before travel.
- The reason Manila gives: a single-entry visa is valid for travel within 3 months from the date of issuance. MOFA adds that the validity of a visa cannot be extended.
- Not too late: MOFA reminds applicants to apply well in advance of the anticipated travel date.
Work, study and family visas: the COE comes first
If the purpose of your visit is work or a long-term stay, MOFA recommends obtaining a Certificate of Eligibility from the regional immigration bureau in Japan before applying for the visa. The application is free, it can be made online, and since 17 March 2023 the certificate can be received by email. ISA gives the standard processing period as 1 to 3 months.
ISA also publishes the average number of days its offices actually took. These are its figures for certificates issued in July 2026, counted from receipt of the application to issue.
| Status of residence | Average days to issue the COE |
|---|---|
| Intra-company Transferee | 37.8 |
| Highly Skilled Professional (i)(b) | 38.7 |
| Student | 41.0 |
| Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services | 49.8 |
| Specified Skilled Worker (i), calculated without food service field applications | 64.1 |
| Dependent | 70.0 |
| Long-Term Resident | 86.5 |
| Skilled Labor | 90.6 |
| Spouse or Child of Japanese National | 106.5 |
| Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident | 116.1 |
| Business Manager | 241.9 |
- What the figures include: the days ISA spent waiting for any additional documents it asked for. Refusals and withdrawn applications are not counted.
- Seasonal peaks: ISA notes that Student applications take longer ahead of the April and October course starts, and that work statuses take longer ahead of the April hiring season.
- After the COE: you still apply for the visa at the embassy. MOFA says presenting the COE lets the visa application and the landing examination be processed smoothly, and that a COE does not guarantee a visa.
Already in Japan: extensions and changes of status
The same ISA release covers applications made inside Japan. For permits granted in July 2026, the averages from receipt to the day the applicant was notified were:
| Application | Average days to notification | Of which, days to the end of examination |
|---|---|---|
| Extension, Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services | 40.8 | 31.1 |
| Extension, Student | 45.4 | 32.4 |
| Extension, Dependent | 38.7 | 29.3 |
| Change of status to Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services | 72.9 | 63.3 |
| Permanent residence | 310.2 | 294.8 |
ISA explains that the notification date is the day you come to the immigration office, so the examination itself can be shorter than the first figure.
Can you speed it up or check the status?
- No fast track: the Washington embassy states that it does not have expedited services. The New Delhi embassy and the Bengaluru consulate state that the visa process cannot be expedited or prioritized according to the schedule of applicants.
- No status enquiries: the New Delhi embassy does not take enquiries about application status, documentation or the reason for a refusal. The Dubai consulate does not accept inquiries about eVisa status.
- Payment requests are fraud: the New Delhi embassy warns that it will never ask for a payment by phone or email to verify documents or expedite a visa.
- Incomplete files are slower: the Islamabad embassy says an application with incomplete documents will take more time, and asks applicants to check their documents carefully before applying.
If the visa is refused
- MOFA does not give the specific reason for a rejection.
- An application for the same purpose of visit is not accepted within six months of the rejection. MOFA sometimes accepts earlier re-applications where circumstances have changed significantly and travel is necessary for humanitarian reasons.
- An application is also not accepted while a visa application is being processed at a different Japanese embassy or consulate, or while a COE application is still pending.
