New Zealand Student Visa 2026: Cost, Funds and Work Rules

By the SettleBuddy editorial teamUpdated 13 October 20268 min read

A New Zealand student visa rests on three proofs: a place on an approved course, tuition paid for the first year, and enough money to live on. Get those right and apply early, because processing is busiest between October and March. This guide follows Immigration New Zealand's own requirements as read on 13 October 2026.

Quick answer

The New Zealand Fee Paying Student Visa costs from NZD 850, and Immigration New Zealand processes 80% of applications within 7 weeks. It is issued for up to 4 years, normally matching the study you have paid for. You need an offer of place from an approved education provider, tuition paid for one course or one year, whichever is shorter, and living funds of NZD 20,000 a year for tertiary or English language study, or NZD 17,000 a year for school. You may work up to 25 hours a week during study and full-time in holidays, depending on your visa conditions. Apply at least 3 months before you plan to travel; the busiest period is October to March.

What you must show

Your provider must also sign a declaration that the course suits your expectations and that you have the English ability and academic capability to pass it.

How much money you need

Type of studyFor a year or moreFor less than a year
Tertiary, English language or other non-compulsory studyNZD 20,000 for each yearNZD 1,667 for each month
Compulsory education, for example school Years 1 to 13NZD 17,000 for each yearNZD 1,417 for each month

These are living costs only, on top of tuition. Immigration New Zealand notes that what it actually costs you depends on where you live and what you pay for accommodation, transport and food.

If you are studying for more than a year, you do not need the money for later years now. Showing a credible plan for funding them, for example with evidence of family income, strengthens the application.

If someone is sponsoring you

A sponsor takes responsibility for your accommodation and living costs. It can be an organisation or an individual, and an individual sponsor must be a family member or friend.

Paying tuition before a decision

If you apply from outside New Zealand you can choose not to pay tuition until your application is approved in principle. The trade-off is time: the application takes longer, because the visa cannot be issued until you show the fees are paid.

When to apply

Immigration New Zealand asks students to apply at least 3 months before they plan to travel. Processing is busiest between October and March. Its advice for avoiding delays is to apply early and include all the information it needs.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Get an offer of place from an approved education provider.
  2. Pay tuition for the first course or year, or decide to pay after approval in principle.
  3. Gather evidence of living funds: NZD 20,000 a year for tertiary study.
  4. Arrange insurance that meets your provider's requirements.
  5. Apply online and pay the fee, at least 3 months before travel.
  6. Provide any health or character documents requested.
  7. Wait for the decision. Eight in ten are decided within 7 weeks.

Younger students

A student aged under 10 who is not living in an approved school hostel must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and live with that person while studying. Immigration New Zealand notes that grandparents do not generally meet the requirements for a guardian visa.

Renewing your visa

If you apply for another student visa, you must show you are passing your course and meeting attendance requirements, with documents such as academic transcripts, attendance records or a letter from your provider. If you fell short you must explain why, and genuine reasons for absence are considered.
