UK Visa Processing Time 2026: How Long Each Visa Takes
How long a UK visa takes depends on two things: the type of visa and whether you apply from outside or inside the UK. UK Visas and Immigration publishes its current times for both. Here they are in one place, with what starts the clock, what slows it down and what a faster decision costs, checked against GOV.UK on 13 October 2026.
Quick answer
Most UK visas applied for from outside the UK take 3 weeks: Standard Visitor, Student, Skilled Worker, Health and Care Worker, Global Talent, Youth Mobility Scheme and most other work routes. Family visas for a partner, parent or child take 12 weeks from outside the UK. From inside the UK most applications take 8 weeks, including Student, Skilled Worker and Graduate, while a Health and Care Worker visa takes 3 weeks. The clock starts when you have proved your identity and submitted your documents, not when you pay. For an extra £500 the priority service usually gives a decision within 5 working days, and for £1,000 the super priority service usually gives one by the end of the next working day.
Processing times when you apply from outside the UK

If you apply from inside the UK before your current visa expires, you can stay in the UK until you get the decision.
When the clock starts and stops
UK Visas and Immigration starts processing your application once you have done one of two things: verified your identity and submitted your documents through the UK Immigration: ID Check app, or attended your appointment to give your fingerprints and a photograph. Paying the fee or submitting the online form does not start the clock on its own.
Processing ends when you get a letter or email saying a decision has been made. Times are counted on the UK working week, Monday to Friday. They include UK public holidays but not public holidays in other countries.
How early you can apply
| Visa | Earliest you can apply |
|---|---|
| Student, from outside the UK | 6 months before your course starts |
| Student, from inside the UK | 3 months before your course starts |
| Skilled Worker | 3 months before the start date on your certificate of sponsorship |
| Youth Mobility Scheme | 6 months before you travel |
| High Potential Individual | 3 months before you travel |
GOV.UK's advice is not to book travel until you have a decision. UK Visas and Immigration will not reimburse travel costs if an application is refused or takes longer than expected.
Paying for a faster decision
| Service | Extra cost per person | Usual decision time |
|---|---|---|
| Priority | £500 | Within 5 working days for most visa applications |
| Priority, for settlement, citizenship and family visas from outside the UK | £500 | Usually 30 working days |
| Super priority | £1,000 | By the end of the next working day |
- The time starts on the day of your appointment if you prove your identity in person, or on the working day after you finish uploading your documents if you use the ID Check app.
- Weekends and bank holidays: with super priority you usually get a decision 2 working days after an appointment or upload on a weekend or bank holiday.
- Families: every family member applying with you must pay the extra fee, and everyone gets a decision at the same time.
- Limits: there is a cap on how many people can use these services, and you cannot use super priority for citizenship applications.
- No guarantee: if the decision takes longer, you do not usually get your money back.
From inside the UK, Skilled Worker and Health and Care Worker applicants can use both services whichever way they prove their identity. Graduate visa applicants who use the ID Check app can use priority but not super priority.
What makes an application take longer
GOV.UK lists the situations in which a decision can take longer than the published time:
- the information in your application is not accurate or needs further consideration;
- you need to provide more evidence, for example evidence of funds;
- your supporting documents need to be verified;
- you need to attend an interview;
- more information is needed about your personal circumstances, for example a criminal conviction;
- UK Visas and Immigration is experiencing increased demand, or there is a technical outage.
You are contacted within the current processing time if your application will take longer. If the time has passed and you have heard nothing, that is the point to contact UK Visas and Immigration. Before then, it will not give you a status update.
A realistic timeline for a work visa from abroad
- Up to 3 months before your start date: your employer assigns your certificate of sponsorship and you apply online.
- Identity step: you use the ID Check app or book a visa application centre appointment. Allow extra time if you need an appointment, which may be in another country.
- 3 weeks: the standard time for a Skilled Worker decision from outside the UK, counted from the identity step.
- Decision email: it tells you how to access your eVisa, the digital record of your status.
