UK Digital Nomad Visa 2026: What the Rules Allow

By the SettleBuddy editorial teamUpdated 13 October 20267 min read

Search GOV.UK's list of work visas and you will not find a digital nomad visa. What the UK has instead is a rule for visitors: a person visiting the country may do work for their overseas job remotely, as long as that work is not the main reason for the trip. For anyone who wants to live in the UK and work for themselves or for clients abroad, the answer lies in a handful of visas that do not need a job offer. This guide sets out both, from the Immigration Rules and GOV.UK, as read on 13 October 2026.

Quick answer

The UK has no visa named for digital nomads. A visitor can stay for up to 6 months and may work remotely for an overseas employer, provided it is not the primary purpose of the visit. Visitors cannot work for a UK company or be self-employed in the UK. Many nationalities travel on an electronic travel authorisation, which costs £20 and lasts 2 years. To live in the UK and work freely, the routes without a job offer include the Youth Mobility Scheme (£340), the High Potential Individual visa (£880) and Global Talent (£766).

Remote work as a visitor: the exact rule

The permitted activities for visitors are set out in an appendix to the Immigration Rules. Paragraph PA 4 lists what a visitor may do in connection with business. Its last item says a visitor may undertake activities relating to their employment overseas remotely from within the UK, providing this is not the primary purpose of their visit.

Read the sentence closely, because each part is a condition:

What a visitor cannot do

At the border you must be able to show that you will leave at the end of your visit, that you can support yourself during the trip and pay for your onward journey, and that you will not make the UK your main home.

How long, and what you need to enter

Length of a visitUsually up to 6 months
Electronic travel authorisation (ETA)Usually needed instead of a visa if you are from Europe, the USA, Australia, Canada or certain other countries

An ETA does not guarantee entry. British and Irish citizens, and people with permission to live, work or study in the UK, do not need one.

Frequently asked questions

Does the UK have a digital nomad visa?

No visa on GOV.UK's list of work visas carries that name. Visitors may work remotely for an overseas job if it is not the primary purpose of the visit, and several visas without a job offer allow self-employment.

Can I work remotely in the UK on a tourist visa or ETA?

Yes, within limits. The Immigration Rules let a visitor undertake activities relating to their employment overseas remotely from within the UK, providing this is not the primary purpose of the visit.

Can I freelance for UK clients as a visitor?

No. A visitor cannot do paid or unpaid work for a UK company or as a self-employed person, apart from permitted paid engagements.

How long can I stay in the UK as a visitor?

Usually up to 6 months. You cannot live in the UK for long periods through frequent or successive visits.

How much is a UK ETA?

£20. It lasts for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner.

Which UK visa lets me be self-employed without a job offer?

The Youth Mobility Scheme, the India Young Professionals Scheme and the High Potential Individual visa all allow self-employment, each with its own eligibility rules.

Can Americans get a Youth Mobility Scheme visa?

The United States is not among the countries GOV.UK lists for the scheme. The listed countries are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, Andorra, Iceland, Japan, Monaco, San Marino and Uruguay, plus Hong Kong and Taiwan by ballot and certain types of British nationality.
